The Howard University Multicultural Media Academy invited high school students to attend a free journalism workshop from June 14-25, 2021. The virtual 10-day program was open to U.S. high school students in ninth through 12th grades and new graduates who would be entering college in the fall. Workshops were held virtually from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. The program focuses on how to use the power of multimedia journalism to cover health and wellness in underserved communities. It is sponsored by the Dow Jones News Fund and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.
“We’re honored that Howard was again selected as one of the national sites to host this new series of workshops with a special focus on health and wellness,” said Professor Yanick Rice Lamb. She is the co-director of the program with Christine McWhorter, Ph.D., an assistant professor of broadcast journalism.
Faculty members, professional journalists and college student coaches taught multicultural high school students how to report stories about the causes of poor health outcomes in their communities, how to engage stakeholders and how to find solutions. Students gained real-life experience in translating this information to disseminate to the public, how to use their curiosity and powers of observation to develop and pitch ideas, and how to tell these stories across platforms.
In addition to the basics of journalism and health reporting, students learned about ethics, Solutions Journalism, the Black Press, social media, deciphering medical journals and studies, management and news trends, mobile journalism, photography, video, and open-source tools, such as Story Map and interactive timelines. They met professionals from a variety of companies, including the Washington Informer, Medium, the Cancer Letter, the New York Times and the Washington Post.
